1st workshop and the summer school on regenerative medicine “BIOCEV Regeneration I”

15. 12. 2021

We are proud to report that in the frames of V4RM network activities we organized the 1st workshop and the summer school on regenerative medicine “BIOCEV Regeneration I”. The activities have been held in the Biotechnology and Biomedicine Centre of the Academy of Sciences and Charles University (BIOCEV), from 14th – 17th of September 2021.

The open workshop contained 9 invited talks by lecturers, representing different research, academic and enterprise organizations of Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, United Kingdom. The opening speech was made by Miroslava Anděrová, Director of the Institute of Medical Research of the CAS, and Prof. Pavel Martásek, Director of the BIOCEV Centre.

The first session “Strategies and tools in neuroregeneration” contained 3 lectures of world-known experts in neuroscience and neuroregeneration. Prof. James Fawcett from the University of Cambridge presented his talk on the regeneration of axons in the central nervous system. Dr. Jessica CF Kwok from the University of Leeds shared insights on Extracellular matrix in neuroplasticity and regeneration. The session was finished by lecture of Prof. Leonora Bużańska from the Mossakowski Medical Research Institute, Warsaw, Poland “Organoids as a powerful technology to study brain development and disease”

Next session has started by the lecture of Prof. András Dinnyés from the BioTalentum LTD, Hungary, who shared his experience in regenerative medicine solutions for type 1 diabetes. The second talk was delivered by Dr. Petr Vaňhara from the Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic, introducing features of expandable lung epithelial cells differentiated from human embryonic stem cells.

Third session of the workshop highlighted the advances in biomaterials and tissue engineering. In the first lecture, Dr. Lucie Bačáková from the Institute of Physiology CAS, Prague, Czech Republic described the role of cell-biomaterial interaction in a view of vascular, bone and skin tissue engineering. Dr. Ognen Pop-Georgievski from the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, CAS, Czech Republic has highlighted the current advanced on biofunctional polymer brushes intended for tissue regeneration applications.

The final session of the event was focused on the cell manufacturing and biobanking aspects of regenerative medicine. Dr. Peter Bauer from the Bioinova LTD. shared his experience in the clinical application of stem cells in the perspective of small enterprise. Dr. Yuriy Petrenko from the Institute of Experimental Medicine in Prague covered several aspects of clinical-grade cryopreservation and stem cell banking.

In total, 60 participants, from various organizations of Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Ukraine attended the workshop.

The summer school 15-17th September (will be added later).
